भारतीय दंड संहिता 1860 की धारा 506 के अनुसार,
आपराधिक अभित्रास के लिए दंड – जो कोई आपराधिक अभित्रास का अपराध करेगा, वह दोनों में से किसी भाँति के कारावास से, जिसकी अवधि दो वर्ष तक की हो सकेगी, या जुर्माने से, या दोनों से दंडित किया जायेगा।
यदि धमकी मृत्यु या घोर उपहति इत्यादि कारित करने की हो – तथा यदि धमकी मृत्यु या घोर उपहति कारित करने की, या अग्नि द्वारा किसी सम्पत्ति का नाश कारित करने की या मृत्युदंड से या आजीवन कारावास से या सात वर्ष की अवधि तक के कारावास से दंडनीय अपराध कारित करने की, या किसी स्त्री पर असतीत्व का लांछन लगाने की हो, तो वह दोनों में से किसी भाँति के कारावास से, जिसकी अवधि सात वर्ष तक की हो सकेगी, या जुर्माने से, या दोनों से, दंडित किया जाएगा।
According to Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code 1860,
Punishment for criminal intimidation — Whoever commits, the offence of criminal intimidation shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both;
If threat be to cause death or grievous hurt, etc — And if the threat be to cause death or grievous hurt; or to cause the destruction of any property by fire, or to cause an offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years, or to impute, unchastely to a woman, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, or with fine, or with both.
